Objective

The Glowing Lines by Heijmans and Studio Roosegaarde got worldwide attention and is one of the most iconic innovative projects done in the Netherlands. I was brought onto the team after the initial version had some issues with the harsh environments of the highway. The goal was to make a version of the Glowing Lines that could withstand these conditions for at least 5 years. There was a lot of international attention for the Glowing Lines at that time and I made several artist impressions of the Glowing Lines for different projects around the world.

Approach

Several tests were done in the lab to see what aspects of the Glowing Lines design needed to be improved. Examples of the tests done: light measurements, climate testing, moisture impact and stress testing. Furthermore a monitoring plan for the Glowing Lines test site on the N329 was made to get field data. All this data was used to improve the Glowing Lines.

Prototyping + Testing

Prototypes were made and tested in the lab. It allowed us to compare results between different versions of the Glowing Lines. Upgraded parts for the Glowing Lines could then be produced.

Sourcing + Quality Control

Most of the different parts of the Glowing Lines were made by external suppliers. All parts were custom made to our technical specifications. It required working closely with suppliers in Europe and America. Each part and material was tested in-house at Heijmans in the lab.

Production

The final assembly of the Glowing Lines was done in-house. At first, most of the work was done by hand. Eventually we made an automated production line.

Construction

Glowing Lines has been implemented on 500 metres of highway on the N329 in Oss, the Netherlands. We designed the process of installing the Glowing Lines in the road, instructed the different teams of Heijmans roadworkers and were in charge of logistics and planning.
